Runners – and walkers – will take to the streets of Pittsburgh on Sunday, September 30, for the 35th running of the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.
“The Great Race remains one of the City’s greatest events, attracting more than a quarter million participants over the past 34 years,” Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said. “While The Great Race was established in 1977 as a 10K ‘fun run’ by the late Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri, it has grown to include a 5K run/walk, running clinic, two-day exposition and children’s race. This variety of events allows individuals of all ages and fitness levels to take part in Pittsburgh’s fall fitness classic.”
According to Race Director Mike Radley, “The key message is register early. Our number one priority remains making The Great Race a safe and enjoyable experience for our participants. Last year’s field of 14,500 runners and walkers set a new record for the race, and this year we’re expanding but will place a cap of 15,000 runners and walkers for the 2012 race.”
Race organizers have announced a new fee structure for 2012 and encourage runners and walkers to register early – and with a friend – to take advantage of the “early bird” rate. Now through July 31, the registration fee is $25/person or “two for $40” (two individuals must register together). Beginning on August 1, all registrants will pay $30/person.
“This year we’re once again encouraging people to take advantage of the convenience of registering online,” said Radley. “Those visiting www.RunGreatRace.com will find no service fee for online registration.”
“We look forward to celebrating the 35th anniversary in numerous ways throughout the coming months, including a salute to our 'Perfect Great Racers,’ the 26 men who have run ever race since 1977,” said Radley. “We’re launching our anniversary celebration by posting a special anniversary retrospective on The Great Race website to showcase 35 years of history and photos.” Individuals can visit the newly redesigned Great Race website at www.RunGreatRace.com to view the anniversary timeline and find complete race details.

“The Great Race remains Pennsylvania’s largest 10K race and is now the 12th largest in the nation.
