A record field of 15,000 runners and walkers will take to the streets of Pittsburgh on Sunday, Sept. 30, for the 35th running of the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Registration is now closed for the 2012 Great Race – after attracting the largest field of runners and walkers in the race’s 35-year history.
“Today we are pleased to announce that we have reached the 15,000 participant mark and Great Race registration is now closed,” said Race Director Mike Radley, who serves as director of the City’s Department of Parks and Recreation. “This 2012 field of runners and walkers sets a new record for the race.”
According to Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, the growing popularity of running events taking place in the City of Pittsburgh makes the region a premier destination for running enthusiasts from across the nation.
“Pittsburgh is truly becoming the City of Runners, not only for the people of western Pennsylvania but for those who come here to take part in The Great Race, our world-class marathon and many other fitness events,” said Ravenstahl. “This year, The Great Race not only set a 35-year registration record at 15,000, but it sold out more than six weeks before the starting gun will sound for Pittsburgh's Fall Fitness Classic.”
Until today, The Great Race registration record stood at 14,500, set in 2011. Last year a total of 9,603 registered for the 10K run – designating it as Pennsylvania’s largest 10K and the 12th largest 10K in the nation – and 4,897 registered for the 5K run/fitness walk.
The starting gun for the 2012 Great Race will sound on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 8:00 a.m. in Oakland for the 5K run/walk. The 10K run will begin in Frick Park at 9:30 a.m. The finish line for both distances is in Point State Park.
In addition to presenting sponsor Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, 2012 Great Race sponsors are: Dollar Bank, Allegheny Sports Medicine, True Runner, Duquesne Light, Bottom Dollar Food, KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh Magazine, Trib Total Media, Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown, The Spaghetti Warehouse and ARAD.
