The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire chefs at Engine and Truck Company #8 (East Liberty) today came away as the victors in a heated competition with cross-town rivals from Engine #32 (Spring Garden) at the third annual chili cook-off held at the Citiparks Farmers’ Market in East Liberty.
Farmers’ market patrons sampled several chili recipes before voting for their favorite, and the crowd chose Engine #8’s spicy-sweet “Backdraft” chili recipe – winner of the 2012 competition – as the grand prize winner again this year.
The event was sponsored for a third year by Giant Eagle Market District, with 2013 proceeds benefitting the Matthew Onyshko Fund (firefighter diagnosed with ALS).
“While the firefighters of Engine 8 have earned bragging rights, everyone came away from this event a winner,” according to firefighter Jim McGinley, who has organized the event since its launch in 2011. “Not only was $1,101 raised for fellow firefighter Matt Onyshko, but City residents of all ages also were able to learn more about fire safety and prevention from local firefighters.”
In addition to hosting the chili cook-off, firefighters distributed fire safety information, and younger residents had the opportunity to climb aboard a fire truck, try on firefighting gear, and hold the equipment used by Pittsburgh firefighters.
