A record field of 14,000 runners and walkers took to the streets of Pittsburgh today for the 33rd running of the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. A total of 9,249 registered for the 10K run, while 4,751 registered for the 5K run/fitness walk.
"This 2010 field of 14,000 runners and walkers sets a new record for the race," said Race Director Mike Radley. "Until today, The Great Race registration record stood at 12,807 set in 1987, although last year we came within 19 runners of matching that record."
In the 10K open division, Sam Luff, 23, of Emmaus, Pa., was the winner in the men's competition with a time of 30:34. Leah Ahlin, 27, of Murrysville, was the winner in the women's competition with a time of 35:35.
In the 5K competition, Paul Thistle, 23, of Pittsburgh, won the male division with a time of 14:59. Morgan Ansell, 13, of Greensburg, won the female division with a time of 18:30.
