(PITTSBURGH) June 20, 2011 Beginning on Tuesday, June 21, and continuing throughout eight weeks of summer, children can enjoy creativity in nature’s studio – the great outdoors – when they visit the Citiparks Roving Art Cart at neighborhood parks and playgrounds. The Roving Art Cart visits one site each Tuesday through Friday (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.) and weekend community festivals and citywide special events (hours vary per event).
“The Citiparks Roving Art Cart takes the artist’s studio into our neighborhoods where children can paint, sculpt, bead and express their creativity in a wide variety of ways,” said Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. “What started in the 1970s as literally a cart on wheels, has grown to become an amazing multi-disciplinary art experience for our City’s youths.”
The 2011 Roving Art Cart activities will include the introduction of a bicycle-powered spin art machine.
“We’re excited to incorporate an ‘action art’ experience that allows artists of all ages to use their own physical power to turn a gearing system that connects a bicycle to a spin art machine,” according to Roving Art Cart manager Nancy Burns. “This project is modeled after the abstract expressionist movement, and it truly brings an active, vibrant participatory element to art making by breaking the boundaries of traditional art. Our new spin art activity also has a recycling twist since we’re applying the paint to discarded 45 records rather than using paper.”
Roving Art Cart opening day festivities will take place on Tuesday, June 21, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Super Playground in Highland Park.
