NCD WORKING GROUP

The Need of a Conservation Districts Working Group

The team will take into consideration a synthesis of elements when contemplating a neighborhood as a potential Conservation District. These factors will encompass the relationship between a neighborhood’s place and architecture as a socio-spatial unique attribute; the community’s demographics, particularly class, race and gender; the nature of its daily life with a focus on how inhabitants interact with and move around the neighborhood; the neighborhood’s cultural history and
environmental characteristics.
This exploration will consider the development of specific areas, while understanding there are comparative distinctions between the city’s neighborhoods and not all can be treated equally.Conservation Districts will be used to protect, restore, preserve and enhance significant older areas within a community beyond what is specified in the standard zoning code, but also understanding that there is a connection between the contemporary reality of its daily life and the interaction with adaptive development which should promote growth and enhance the wellbeing of the community.
