Managing Your Waste

What is Required?

Apartments and multi-family dwellings with 6 or more units must establish a collection system to separate the following recyclables, per City Code §619.05(b) and the ES Waste Regulations:

  • Office Paper
  • Newspaper
  • Magazines
  • Hardcover / Softcover Books
  • Catalogs
  • Junk Mail / Phone Books
  • Paperboard
  • Beverage Bottles
  • Gallon Jugs
  • Food Bottles, Tubs and Jars (3 gallons or less)
  • No Styrofoam or #6 Plastics
  • Must be clean and dry. Discard all lids and caps.
  • Beer / Juice / Soda Cans
  • Food Cans
  • Aerosol Cans (Must be completely empty)
  • Must be clean and dry.
  • Food Jars
  • Beer / Juice / Soda Bottles
  • Wine / Spirit Bottles
  • Growlers
  • No plate glass (windows) or dinnerware (Pyrex, etc.)
  • Must be clean and dry.
  • Must be flattened and either bundled or placed inside of another cardboard box for set out
  • Do not include any heavily-soiled/food waste cardboard (from pizza boxes, etc.)

It is also the responsibility of property owners, landlord or their agents to contract a private hauler to collect and deliver the recyclables to a processor.

Best Management Practices

The ideal collection system should:

  • Have separate and clearly marked receptacles for collecting commingled recyclables from tenants
  • Maintain relative parity between the number of recycling and refuse containers/locations for greater accessibility and participation
  • Be serviced or equipped adequately to prevent both overflow and contamination
  • Provide written instructions to tenants concerning the use and availability of the collection system
    • These can be incorporated into the lease documents and agreed upon at move-in
