JUNE 26: Vashon Historic Marker Dedication

Historic Marker Dedication Info Graphic

Join us for a celebration and historic dedication for George B. Vashon.

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission approved a marker honoring George B. Vashon (1824-1878) that will be unveiled June 26, 2026 at 1:00pm at its location at the corner of Third Avenue and Market Streets right across the street from PPG Plaza.  There will be an event at which Paul Thornell, Vashon’s great, great grandson, will be joined by officials from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, Oberlin College, and other community leaders to help showcase the historic contributions of Vashon in Pittsburgh and the nation during his years as a leading Black abolitionist, educator, lawyer, and writer.

The City of Pittsburgh is honored to participate in this significant occasion, honoring George B. Vashon, along with his enduring legacy and family. In February, the family was also recognized at the City County Building Black History Month Exhibition.

George, who grew up largely in Pittsburgh, became the first Black graduate of Oberlin College and the first Black lawyer admitted to the New York Bar.  George was an educator and poet, and he contributed regularly to Frederick Douglass’ North Star publication.

He was denied admission to the Pennsylvania Bar due to his race, but in 2010, his great-grandson, Nolan N. Atkinson Esq.-- then chief diversity officer, City of Philadelphia, and 1967 graduate of the Howard University School of Law -- successfully petitioned to have George B. Vashon posthumously admitted to the Pennsylvania bar.
