Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire firefighters from Engine and Truck Company No. Eight, located in East Liberty, will host a chili cook-off competition on Mon., Aug. 8 at the East Liberty Citiparks Farmers’ Market. The firefighters will compete with chefs from the Giant Eagle Market District to determine who has the best chili recipe. For a small donation, residents are welcome to sample four different chili recipes and vote for their favorite. The chili with the most votes will be announced the winner. All money collected will benefit the competitors chosen charities: Muscular Dystrophy Association Burn Camp (Station No. 8) and East End Cooperative Ministry (Giant Eagle Market District).
Firefighters will be available to answer any questions regarding fire safety and prevention. Younger residents will have the opportunity to climb aboard a fire truck, try on firefighting gear, and hold the equipment used by Pittsburgh firemen. Coloring books and stickers will also be offered to the children in attendance. Additionally, as part of the Bureau’s Smoke Detector Program, a sign-up sheet will be available for residents interested in obtaining a smoke detector for their home.
