Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today announced that, following input from residents, the City’s initial inventory of war memorials currently totals over 120 monuments. The full list can be viewed on the City’s website. Residents are encouraged to review the list and provide any additional information for monuments that are not yet included.

“Making sure that our City’s war memorials are preserved and cared for is one small way that we can honor the brave men and women who have fought for our Country,” said Ravenstahl. “While we’re pleased by the participation so far, residents are encouraged to share information they may have on war monuments not yet featured in the new inventory database.”

Monuments include memorials, honor rolls, artwork and monuments pertaining to any war or individual connected to an American conflict. Location, condition information and photographs are needed to build the database.

This past summer, the City's Department of Public Works and City Planning asked community members to help indentify neighborhood memorials by completing a War Monument Identification form. Once information was received from the public, location and condition data was integrated into a database to create the complete inventory. City staff then performed on-site condition evaluations of each piece and a professional conservator provided a long-term maintenance plan for these pieces.

This Citywide project has been created in collaboration with the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, the Senator John Heinz History Center, the Northside Leadership Conference and the help of the Veterans and community organizations throughout the City.
