Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and County Executive Dan Onorato yesterday hosted a Small Business Contracting Seminar in an effort to reach out to regional businesses about the contracting opportunities that exist in City/County government. More than 230 small businesses attended the seminar located at the United Way building downtown, exceeding the leaders' expectations.
"We were expecting 100 businesses, and we more than doubled that," Mayor Ravenstahl said. "This is a big first step when it comes to improving opportunity, transparency and efficiency in the contracting process. When more businesses compete for contracts, our residents get better, more efficient services."
The City's Equal Opportunity Review Commission along with Allegheny County's Department of Minority / Women and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise gave a two hour presentation focusing on educating businesses on the procurement process from application to implementation. City/County department and authority directors presented businesses with contracting opportunities happening within the year. After the presentation, business leaders networked with department and authority directors.
"I believe we will see more contractors and companies who have never done business with the County and City get involved because of this seminar," said Onorato. "Our bidding process has always been open, but it is important to repeatedly educate the public and engage businesses to provide meaningful opportunities in our region."
The City also handed out "small business resource guides" which seeks to help businesses navigate the procurement process.
Mayor Ravenstahl recently announced the formation of the Pittsburgh Contracting Best Practices Commission in order to better infuse transparency, efficiency and opportunity into local government procurement practices.
