November 20, 2008 - Mayor Luke Ravenstahl tomorrow will officially kick off Pittsburgh's holiday festivities by lighting the City's 36-foot holiday tree on the Grant Street Portico of the City-County Building on Friday, Nov. 21 at noontime.
"Shining Stars of Pittsburgh" will serve as this year's theme for the City's annual tree lighting ceremony. The Mayor encourages Pittsburgh families to be 'shining stars' and make donations of new or used toys as well as non-perishable food items to the Salvation Army Food & Toy Drive. The organization will be onsite collecting items and monetary donations from 12 to 1 p.m.
"Let us ring in the holiday season the way Pittsburghers know how - by celebrating and giving," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said. "Come down to the Portico during lunchtime, bring your family and friends - and a donation. In return, enjoy free caroling, warm coffee and sweets, and be part of Pittsburgh's most memorable tree lighting ceremonies."
The lunchtime festivities will include an opportunity to meet and greet Santa Claus as well as characters from the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's performance of "The Nutcracker," and mascots including the Pirate Parrot, Iceburgh, Steely McBeam, the Pitt Panther, and the Nittany Lion.
All attending the tree lighting will enjoy cookies provided by the International Culinary Schools at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh as well as coffee, compliments of Caribou Coffee.
Beginning at 11:15 a.m., the Salvation Army Ensemble will perform on the Portico. At noon, the Point Park University Singers will entertain the crowd.
At 12:30 p.m., Mayor Ravenstahl will lead the countdown to illuminate the decorated holiday tree - a 36-foot Colorado blue spruce donated by City resident, Mr. Eugene Wind. Citiparks once again sponsored an ornament competition for Pittsburgh public, private and parochial school students in kindergarten through 12th grade. All entries will hang on the holiday tree.
Following the tree lighting ceremony, the Point Park University Singers will resume performing holiday music until 1:00 p.m.
