Events underscore leading role of women in Pittsburgh policy, culture and economy

PITTSBURGH, PA - Mayor William Peduto is attending a slate of events today highlighting the key leadership roles women are playing in the city.

“From the arts to construction to technology to activism, women are showing the ways Pittsburgh is reasserting itself on the global stage. There is a still a long way to go to address equal pay and other issues, but having this great pool of women leaders makes my job much easier, and it is a privilege for me to honor them,” Mayor Peduto said.

More than half of the Mayor’s executive team are women, and women chair more than half of the city boards and commissions he has restructured since taking office in January.

An event Thursday announcing the city’s partnership with a neighborhood social media network was helmed entirely by women -- Nextdoor co-founder Sarah Leary, Zone 1 Police Commander RaShall Brackney, Lawrenceville United executive director Lauren Byrne, city Analytics and Strategy Manager Laura Meixell, and city Assistant Communications Manager Katie O’Malley.

In his office tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., Mayor Peduto will honor the efforts of Rylee Laya, a 14-year-old girl suffering from arthritis who has successfully advocated on Capitol Hill for better juvenile arthritis research, treatment and access to care.
