PITTSBURGH, PA (January 3, 2015) - The City of Pittsburgh Public Works Crews have been treating transportation surfaces throughout the city due to this morning's winter weather event.
Crews began work at 4:00 a.m. this morning in preparation for a winter weather event that was expected to occur between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The event occurred on time. A total of 34 trucks (approximately 5-7 in each division) were dispatched to treat bridges, ramps and higher elevation areas in addition to primary and some secondary routes. Heavy Equipment Operators were also on hand to load salt trucks.
Due to the nature of this weather event, there was no opportunity to pre-treat roads. Had dry roads been pre-treated, the material would have been washed away by the rain, prior to freezing temperatures. Trucks were ready and on their respective routes when rain began turning to ice.
As temperatures rise this morning, crews will continue work and monitor road conditions until approximately 1:00 p.m. today. If necessary, fresh crews of 2-3 trucks per division will be called in to address the secondary and tertiary routes in the city.
Due to weather conditions, Environmental Services trucks were held until approximately 10:00 a.m.
