Mayor William Peduto's Public Schedule January 19, 2015
On MLK Day, Mayor participates with Pittsburgh children to promote peace and understanding through the arts

PITTSBURGH, PA (Jan. 19, 2015) Mayor William Peduto’s schedule today focuses on honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, along with Pittsburgh children citywide.

At the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on the city’s North Side, Mayor Peduto will join kids and adults in reading aloud the speeches of Dr. King, in the "King for a Day" program hosted by The Saturday Light Brigade Radio Show. All ages are invited to take the podium at this annual event.

Afterwards at the nearby Mattress Factory museum the Mayor will attend the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Bash for birthday cake and a celebration of the life of Dr. King. The doors are open to all on a pay-as-you-go basis, and both children and adults can visit the museum’s installations, participate in workshops and attend a child-friendly Kid City Rockers dance party.

The Mayor next travels to the Kelly Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty for the 5th annual East Liberty Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The theme of this year’s festivities is “Every Voice Counts, Every Story Matters.” Activities at the free event will be available in the theater lobby, led by partner social justice organizations including MGR Foundation, Garden of Peace Project, Love Front Porch, Union Project, Assemble, and Literary Arts Boom. On-stage performances will feature talented youth ensembles from the region, including Hope Academy, CHANCE, 1Hood Media, Dreams of Hope, and the Kelly Strayhorn's own Soundwaves Steelband. Another community partner, North Way Christian Communities, will have a project on display in the theater lobby and offer activities in their office next door to the theater.

The Mayor will then attend the Exploring Our Differences, Together, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration at the Union Project in Stanton Heights. This event features open discussion about the differences between people, and features a community meal.
