Statement from Mayor William Peduto on Pittsburgh-Uber Relations

PITTSBURGH, PA (April 3, 2017) - Mayor William Peduto issued the following statement today regarding ongoing relations between the City of Pittsburgh and Uber referenced in an article published in the Wall Street Journal today, titled Uber Self-Driving Program Hits Another Pothole

"One hundred years ago, Pittsburgh was the original economic disruptor. We created air dangerous to breathe, water poisonous to drink and the greatest disparity between the haves and have nots in American history.

It took over fifty years for us to reverse our environmental degradation and create the middle class. Now we find ourselves at the center of the next economic disruption. Pittsburgh is a global center for robotics, autonomous manufacturing and artificial intelligence. But, in Pittsburgh, we know that economic disrupters have a moral obligation to provide societal benefits.

Pittsburgh is committed to our p4 principles - people, planet, place and performance. We understand that not all economic growth benefits society. We have lived it. We stand on the shoulders of our parents and grandparents who sacrificed to guarantee workers the chance at the American dream. We are committed to build from that base so that our new economy benefits our workers, our environment and the city we love.

In Pittsburgh we have a saying - if it's not for all, it's not for us. That's in our DNA, that's who we are. We look forward to working with all companies in building the new economy, sharing our talent and our work ethic. However, we expect our partners to respect our past, just as we do, as we continue to build our future."
