It is the goal of the CityFit-Wellness at Work Program for employees of the City of Pittsburgh is to promote awareness of:

CityFit will empower employees through programming and the support of healthy lifestyle choices. This will help employees enhance their pursuit of healthy living. This program will reach out to employees of all ages and abilities to motivate and improve their lifestyles.

Medical Benefits

The City of Pittsburgh provides medical plans to employees and their families. Plans are provided with confidentiality and integrity. These medical plans are in compliance with laws and regulations, public policy and collective bargaining agreements.

Teamsters and PJCBC union members are covered under separate union plans.

The City of Pittsburgh offers a choice of three medical plans. Police can also select the Premium Plan among the three carriers

Each plan has the same design. The differences between the plans are the doctors and hospitals.

Health Advocate

HealthAdvocate is a no cost benefit to you or members of your household. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The program enables you to address personal, relationship, job-related, and career needs in a private, confidential environment. 

The goal of HealthAdvocate is to offer solutions to balance your work, life, and wellness. Employees and family members can refer themselves to HealthAdvocate.  

The program may be reached 24 hours a day on weekdays and weekends by calling 877-240-6863 & you can access a great deal of helpful information and resources on the HealthAdvocate Website.

Telemedicine

Telemedicine is a new exciting cost effective service for you. Telemedicine is an interactive communication (similar to an office visit) between you and physicians via phone or video. 

It is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A virtual medicine doctor consultation costs $10.00. Highmark, Aetna, and UPMC all offer this service. 

When should you consider Telemedicine? 

Some examples that Telemedicine can be used for:  

  • Minor illnesses 
  • Including flu 
  • Coughs 
  • Colds 
  • Mental health counseling 
  • Dermatology 
  • Follow-up visits with a PCP or specialist when available 

Familiarize yourself with all the Telemedicine vendors offered through your provider and to sign up BEFORE you need it. 

How do you use Telemedicine? 

You can find registration information below for each vendor, depending on which Healthcare provider you are insured through and your individual needs. It's important to get signed up to Telemedicine before you need it!

Flexible Spending Account

A Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) lets you set aside part of your paycheck to pay you back for future health care or dependent care expenses. You decide how much to contribute to the account. 

The portion of your paycheck you put into your FSA is taken out before you pay federal income taxes, Social Security taxes, and most state taxes. 

How can I use the money?

The Internal Revenue Code specifies how your health care FSA funds can be used. Approved expenses include medical, dental, and vision products, and services performed by medical professionals to diagnose, treat, or prevent diseases for you and your family.

You may be able to use your FSA to pay for expenses like:

  • Co-payments
  • Co-insurance
  • Deductibles
  • Prescriptions

You may also be able to use your FSA to pay for more medical expenses not covered by your health plan, like:

  • Dental care/orthodontia
  • Eye exams
  • Hearing aids
  • Laser eye surgery
  • Nicotine gum or patches/smoking cessation programs
  • Vision care products such as glasses and contact lenses

You can also use FSA funds for other items such as:

  • Alternative drugs and medicines
  • Exercise equipment and programs
  • Even vitamins when they are prescribed by your physician

The City provides an FSA spending card so that you pay in real time for most expenses. Your debit card is a simple and convenient way to use your FSA money. It can be used at doctors’ offices, medical facilities, dental and vision centers, and pharmacies.

Tips for Using Your Debit Card:

  • Always check your account balance to see how much money is in your FSA before you use your card
  • If your expense is more than the balance on your FSA debit card, you can split it between two payment methods.
  • Tell the person at checkout how much to apply to your FSA debit card
  • Pay the remaining amount with another form of payment
  • When paying at the cash register you can select credit or debit
  • You will receive a PIN when you get your debit card.
  • This card cannot be used to withdraw cash at an ATM and cannot be used to get cash back
  • Save your receipts, as you may need to confirm that your purchase was eligible

FSA_Plan_Year_Extension 

This new important feature now operating in your Flexible Spending Account (‘FSA’) helps you: 

  1. Extend your FSA account beyond the traditional ‘use it or lose it’ arrangement 
  2. Make better use of your money in the FSA, and 
  3. More closely set your FSA contribution each year.

Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance 

The City of Pittsburgh provides eligible employees with basic life and AD&D insurance.  You are covered at varying amounts of basic life and AD&D insurance based on your employee group or Collectively Bargained Agreement (CBA). 

  • Options for supplemental life are available as shown below, if covered under your Collectively Bargained Agreement (CBA)

Supplemental Life Insurances 

  • Eligible employees have the opportunity to purchase Supplemental Life Insurance coverage equal to their base annual earnings rounded up to the next $10,000.00; not to exceed $50,000.00.  
  • Amount available is based upon your age.
  • Deductions are taken first pay of the month. 
  • Medical evidence of insurability is waived if enrolled within 31 days from hire date. 
  • Eligible employees have Life Insurance on date of hire. However,  supplemental coverage WILL NOT BEGIN until we receive your enrollment form with Beneficiary designation signed. 
  • If enrolled late, the benefit will be effective the first day of the month in which a payroll deduction is taken.

Basic Accidental Death And Dismemberment Insurance 

  • Eligible employees have an Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy. 
  • No Cash value; payable upon your death only if death is deemed an Accident. 
  • Basic AD&D Covers employee only. 

You May file a claim for Dismemberment if you become disabled due to an Accident-Loss of; Hand, Foot, Eyesight, or Hearing. 

Additional stipulations apply for Dismemberment, Please refer to the Handbook. 

 

Supplemental Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance 

  • Eligible employees may elect single or family supplemental AD&D insurance.  
  • No Medical evidence of insurability is required. 
  • Eligible employees can elect up to three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000). Your election can not exceed an amount that is 10 times greater than your annual base salary. 
  • You have the option to change, update or cancel at anytime.

 

Short Term and Long Term Disability Insurance 

Both short and long-term non-work related disability insurance is offered to eligible full time employees.  Both short term and long term disability coverage are designed to help protect your income in the event that you are unable to work. Certain union members may have other disability coverage offered through their union agreements. 

 

Short Term Disability 

There are two types of Short Term Disability insurances offered, Basic & Enhanced. 

Basic: 

  • Waiting period of 90 days from date of hire. 
  • Basic is a non-contributory option. 
  • Pays you at 50% of your base wage. 

Coverage begins either on the 22nd day, or once all sick, personal, comp and vacation days have been exhausted. If you have no sick, personal comp or vacation days, you will be on unpaid leave. 

Enhanced: 

  • Enhanced Short Term Disability will pay you at 60% of your base wage. 
  • Requires a monthly after-tax based contribution, based on your earnings. You pay $0.125 cents for every $10 dollars that you earn. 

The maximum benefit period for Short Term Disability varies based on employment length.  

  • For employees with more than 90 days but less than 1 year of service you will be eligible for up to 8 weeks. 
  • For employees with at least 1 year but less than 2 years of service you will be eligible for up to 15 weeks. 
  • For employees with 2 years but less than 4 years of service you will be eligible for up to 20 weeks. 
  • For employees with 4 or more years of service you will be eligible for up to 26 weeks. 

 

Long Term Disability 

Employees are eligible for Long Term Disability Insurance after they have been employed for five (5) years. There are two types of Long Term Disability insurances offered, Basic & Enhanced. 

Basic: 

  • Basic is a non-contributory option. 
  • Pays you at 50% of your base wage. 

Enhanced: 

  • Enhanced Long Term Disability will pay you at 60% of your base wage. 
  • Requires a monthly after-tax based contribution, based on your earnings.
