Commercial Cooking Hood Permit
A commercial cooking hood permit is required prior to the repair or alteration an existing cooking hood, or installation a new cooking hood.
All work under a commercial cooking hood permit must be performed by a HVAC Contractor registered with the City of Pittsburgh.
How to Get a Hood Permit
- Apply in person at the Zoning Counter, located at 200 Ross St on the 3rd floor for an Occupancy Permit, if required (see above).
- Submit the completed Commercial Cooking Hood Application and check/money order to the Electrical Counter located at 200 Ross St, 3rd floor or mail them to:

- Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections staff reviews and processes the application. All Commercial Cooking Hood permits are logged into our queue and processed in the order in which they are received. Once issued, the permit will be mailed to the registered HVAC Contractor.
Items Required for Permi
- Commercial Cooking Hood Application (now includes worksheet) completed by the applicant and PA licensed Architect or Engineer.
- Two sets of drawings prepared and sealed by PA licensed Engineer/Architect.
- If work is related to a building permit, a copy of the approved building permit.
- Occupancy Permit for all exterior equipment, such as a rooftop fans. In this instance, a separate check or money order is required for the Zoning filing fee.
- A Cooking Hood Suppression, Electrical and/or Fire Alarm permits may be required depending on the scope of work.
- A check or money order for the permit fee.
The assigned HVAC Inspector and their phone number will be printed on the permit. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to arrange for all required inspections by contacting the HVAC Inspector. Inspectors are in the office Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., and are in the field for the remainder of the day.
- A rough-in inspection before any work is concealed.
- A final inspection when all work is complete.
