MAYOR, PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR WARN RESIDENTS OF THE POTENTIAL OF SEVERE WEATHER THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING
City pools will close at 2 p.m. today and the Mayor's Big League games are cancelled this evening

(PITTSBURGH)  JULY 26    City officials urge residents to be prepared for the possibility of widespread severe weather this afternoon and into the evening. The National Weather Service has indicated that there is a high probability of storms that may hit the Pittsburgh area, causing the potential for flash flooding and wind damage.

"We urge residents to err on the side of caution, stay indoors, and check on your elderly neighbors and family. As always, stay tuned to local media and your national weather radio for new developments," Mayor Ravenstahl said.

Both public safety and public works departments have added additional personnel. Emergency Management has directed the prepositioning of units and equipment.

"We are prepared to respond to a worst possible case scenario storm, but we need the public to help us by remaining vigilant and exercising extreme caution."Residents must use extreme caution, especially during their rush hour commute. Do not drive into flooded water, and look out for downed trees and powerlines," said Public Safety Director Michael Huss.

All 2,000-plus public safety employees have completed the City's recent Swift Water Rescue Training program. The new initiative, launched by Director Huss, better prepares public safety personnel on how to stay safe and make rescues during flash flood situations. In addition, the program equips every first responder with throw bags, adds more rafts to flood prone areas and creates an elite square of swift water rescue teams, among other strategies. Pittsburgh is the only city in America that has received such a comprehensive training, which proved successful during last week's flash flood on Rt. 88 and 51. Public safety personnel were equipped with throw bags and life jackets and responded swiftly making several rescues.

In the interest of public safety, the following city events will be cancelled:

OUTDOOR POOLS CLOSED
* all 18 Citiparks swimming pools closed at 2 p.m.

MAYOR'S CUP CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES AT PNC PARK POSTPONED
