Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Public Safety is to provide for the security and safety of all residents and patrons of the City of Pittsburgh through the oversight and execution of the public safety operational strategies of the Bureaus of Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Emergency Management (EMA), Building Inspection, and Animal Care and Control.  This mission includes Improving community and first responder safety through training, technology, fleet upgrades and increased community visibility as well as enhancing and enforcing team collaboration across all Public Safety Bureaus.

The Director, through the Department of Public Safety, oversees and leads the overall public safety strategy for the City of Pittsburgh.  The Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety is known nationally as a professional and competent partner in the public safety arena as represented through significant events which have been held in the city throughout the recent years.  In 2009, the professionalism and capabilities of Public Safety Department personnel were tested when Pittsburgh was selected to host the G-20 summit.  Public safety personnel put in more than 1,200 hours of planning and operational support and the City hosted a safe and successful G-20 summit.  Cities across the world can now look to Pittsburgh as one model for safely hosting an event of this magnitude. Also in 2009, the department successfully managed victory parades for the championship Steelers and Penguins which drew hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Looking foward into 2015, the Pittsburgh Initiative to Reduce Crime will be operating to reduce the number of homicides, and a new gunshot detection system in specified areas within the City will be deployed.  In addition, the Director of Public Safety is committed to strengthening the relationship between the community and all Public Safety Department Bureaus and has implemented a new community outreach program managed within the Office of the Director.  This program will enhance and coordinate all initiatives across the Department of Public Safety Bureaus, other departments within city government, as well as with the Office of the Mayor. 

The Director is committed to leveraging partnerships across the law enforcement community within the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and surrounding areas.  This commitment involves working closer with federal partners such as the Office of the United States Attorney, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, United States Secret Service and others to leverage federal assistance in addressing the crime rate within the City of Pittsburgh.  Moreover, our federal partnerships will continually be enhanced with relationships between the Department of Public Safety and the Pennsylvania State Police, Office of the Pennsylvania Attorney General, Office of the District Attorney of Allegheny County, Allegheny County Police, Office of the Allegheny County Sheriff and other local law enforcement agencies within southwestern Pennsylvania.
