Obtaining a high school diploma contributes to significantly better life outcomes for youth, yet many Pittsburgh students never reach this goal.  Intervention efforts are often focused at supporting students during their high school years when the risk of not graduating is most critical.  To lower the number of students who fall into this "high-risk" category, intervention needs to start sooner. ALCOSAN Summer Science offers students an exciting week of hands-on activities and field trips related to the sciences of wastewater treatment and engineering.  Each session is designed using PA standards for Environment and Ecology as well as Science and Technology and Engineering Education.  All students currently in grades 4 - 8 attending schools within the ALSCOSAN service area are eligible to participate.  

There are no fees associated with the Summer Science Program; however, students are required to bring their own lunch.

According to Mercy Behavioral Health, prevention and intervention of unhealthy behaviors takes more than just filling a youth's mind with facts and statistics. Programs and strategies must include ways to build self-confidence, develop socialization skills, and identify coping strategies.  This gives youth the knowledge, hope, and emotional strength to deal with life's challenges.

This workshop for afterschool and OST staff facilitated by Kellen Hill from MBH will focus on prevention and intervention strategies for youth in crisis.  When you leave the workshop, you will be able to:

• develop prevention tactics
• identify signs of trauma in youth
• implement short term and long term practical strategies for youth interventions
• understand mandatory reporting

About Kellen Hill

Kellen Hill moved to Pittsburgh from the Philadelphia area in 2004 to pursue an undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh, where he double majored in Psychology and Sociology. After completing his Bachelors degree, Kellen began the University of Pittsburgh Master of Social Work (MSW) program, where his area of study was Direct Practice with a certificate in Home and School Visitation. Kellen has multiple experiences working with youth in afterschool and OST programs throughout both undergraduate and graduate school, and has worked as an Intervention/Prevention Specialist at Mercy Behavioral Health since 2010. In addition to working with youth, Kellen has participated in MBH's initiative, Dancing Classrooms Pittsburgh (http://dancingclassroomspgh.org/), teaching ballroom dancing to students, and teaches DUI offenders through the Highway Safety Program.

From the Underground Railroad to the Gee’s Bend Quilts, quilting is an art form that has deep roots in Black history and culture. Teens are invited to this hands-on quilting workshop to celebrate Black History Month. All materials provided. Participation is limited and registration is required.

PACAC is proud to partner with the Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's Office in Pittsburgh and PHEAA for a College Success Forum.  This program is designed to bring together education professionals from all sides of the desk to discuss issues regarding college access and success, especially in the Pittsburgh area.   The hope is that this conversation will lead to more regular regional “roundtable” meetings in the future, focused on helping students find successful pathways to college and careers.

Youth Maker Night is a fun evening event for youth, ages 10-15, to experience MAKESHOP after hours! Hang out with other youth and our Teaching Artists while participating in a variety of activities, including color-changing hats and scarves.

Tickets are $10 ($8 for members) per participant, which includes dinner and all materials. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.

Please note that this is an evening event and participants must be between 10-15 years old . Parents are not required to attend the event with their child, but please plan to pick up by 8:00pm.

Create a scarf or hat that can light up and change colors in response to a change in the temperature of the fabric.

Join Guest Maker Deren Guler for this FREE workshop that will teach you about sewing, as well as special fabrics and threads that can be used to make fabric light up. Participants will be able to cut and sew a pattern of choice and embed special features to make a unique design. 

No experience is necessary, but this workshop is intended for children ages 8 and up. 

Registration is required and space is limited. 

This workshop is FREE with museum admission. At least one parent should be in attendance.

Learn about knitting and help to make panels for the Knit the Bridge project! Join guest knitters who will demonstrate and teach the art of knitting. 

Knit the Bridge is a vision for a grassroots, community-led arts project that would bring the many diverse communities of Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania together to create a large-scale, aesthetically stunning, fiberarts installation on a bridge in downtown Pittsburgh.

Children are welcome to spend part of Christmas to help prepare breakfast for the National Aviary's colony of African penguins, attend a private feeding, and learn what makes these endangered birds so special. Camp includes a close-up encounter and an original masterpiece painted by one of our penguins. Thursday's camp is for kids ages six to eight. Friday's camp is for kids ages nine to twelve. As part of its Thursday afternoon series, the Downtown & Business Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will screen the documentary "Writing Your Own Last Chapter." The documentary focuses on local families as they take an active role in their own end-of-life planning. The film follows patients, their families and their caregivers. The screening will be followed by a discussion of resources available through www.closure.com that will help families begin the conversation about their family members' final wishes. The program, which will take place at 12;15 p.m. at the branch library, is sponsored by the Jewish Healthcare Foundation and will be presented by J. Franz, M.D., and Anna Hays, an attorney with Julian Gray Associates. The program is free. The Downtown & Business Branch is located at 612 Smithfield St.

The University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform in concert at 8 p.m. in the Bellefield Hall auditorium on the university campus. The program includes works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninov. Featured performers will be Ted Zellers on trombone and pianist Harry Jamison. Free.
