Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works Environmental Services is hosting their fall yard debris collection event in November. Residents are encouraged to place yard debris, such as branches, leaves, and grass, on their curb for collection the morning, before 6:00a.m., on November 2nd, 2024. Halloween pumpkins will also be accepted during the collection for composting as an alternative to residents placing them in the trash.
The goal of this event is to reduce the amount of valuable natural resources from entering the landfills. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection estimates that 40% of what goes in the landfill is compostable. The City’s bi-annual yard debris events are just one of the ways we’re working to prevent compostable material from entering the landfill. Yard debris collected from this event will be used to produce local compost, a portion of which will be used to enrich landscapes throughout the city.
“This is a great program for the city, it provides residents with curbside service to dispose of their yard debris and be environmentally conscious,” said City Recycling Supervisor Vanessa Reaves. “We are working on projects to expand our yard debris and composting services for residents that is projected to start next year.”
