Mayor Ed Gainey Nominates Christopher Ragland as Next Pittsburgh Police Chief
Pittsburgh, PA – Today, Mayor Ed Gainey submitted to Pittsburgh City Council his nomination of Acting Chief Christopher Ragland as the next chief of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. This decision follows a careful and thorough process, including engagement with officers in all six police zones across the city, where Mayor Gainey sought input on what improvements are needed.
Mayor Gainey’s decision underscores his commitment to select a police chief with a deep understanding of the Bureau’s operations that also possesses the leadership qualities needed to guide the force in fostering accountability, supporting our officers, and building community trust.
“Acting Chief Ragland has demonstrated the ability to lead the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police with a commitment to moving the Bureau in the right direction,” said Mayor Gainey. “He believes in unbiased policing, grounding his work in respect for each person that he encounters. He has a deep understanding of all Bureau needs— from operations to administration— and a strong commitment to human and civil rights. With this foundation, he’s focused on building on our progress to enhance communication, accountability, and service to the people of Pittsburgh.”
Christopher Ragland has been serving as acting chief since the departure of former Chief Larry Scirotto and has dedicated more than 30 years of service to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. In his current role as Assistant Chief of the Professional Standards branch, he is responsible for the development of policies for the training academy, as well as overseeing internal investigations to ensure that the department remains transparent, and that veteran officers and new recruits alike meet the standards that our community wants.
Ragland’s extensive experience includes serving as Commander of the Special Deployment Division (SDD), as well as leading Zones One, Three, and Six. He has also worked within the Office of Strategy, Accountability, and Resiliency. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to policing, including helping establish the Bureau’s relationship-based policing strategy and assisting in securing funding for the Public Safety Center in Northview Heights. Additionally, as Commander of Zone One, he developed a Youth Diversion Program that continues to have a positive impact on Pittsburgh’s communities. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Hear Foundation Board of Directors, a Pittsburgh-based non-profit dedicated to collaborating with community leaders, police, and residents to create a safe, thriving community for all.
Mayor Gainey’s nomination underscores the critical need for a leader who not only possesses extensive experience but also a profound understanding of the Bureau's vital relationship with the community, ensuring effective and trusted law enforcement.
Ragland’s nomination now proceeds to City Council for an interview and confirmation vote.
