Mayor Ed Gainey and City of Pittsburgh Recognize Family Court Awareness Month with Proclamation Ceremony

Pittsburgh, PA – On Wednesday, November 20, Mayor Ed Gainey and the City of Pittsburgh will hold a proclamation ceremony in recognition of Family Court Awareness Month.  Several survivors of family violence and family court processes will be present during the special event to share their stories and to raise awareness.

“During Family Court Awareness Month, it’s important that we highlight the crucial role our family courts play in promoting justice and stability for families in our city.  It’s also important that we uplift the stories of survivors so that we all understand the importance of protecting the rights and wellbeing of every child and family that call Pittsburgh home,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.

Child safety should always be the number one priority when our family courts make child custody decisions in cases where family violence concerns are raised.  The Commonwealth has made important progress in this arena and has helped launch a national reform effort.  Thanks to years of work by Pennsylvania legislators, policymakers, and advocates, this year Act 8, “Kayden’s Law” was passed and signed into law by Governor Shapiro.

The proclamation ceremony will hopeful raise awareness of the need to keep our children safe from family violence and improve court practices in cases involving abuse in our city, our state, and our country - today and everyday.
