Your Voice, Our Future: Pittsburgh 2050 Begins Its Journey
Pittsburgh, PA – Every neighborhood tells a story. Every resident holds a dream for tomorrow. On January 30th, 2025, Pittsburgh begins an unprecedented journey to weave these stories and dreams into a shared vision for our city's future.
For generations, Pittsburgh's 90 neighborhoods have been the heart and soul of our city – where families have grown, where communities have flourished, and where countless memories have been made. Now, for the first time in our city's rich 200-year history, Pittsburgh 2050 brings all these neighborhoods together to imagine and create our collective future.
"Pittsburgh 2050 is about honoring our past while boldly stepping into our future," said Mayor Ed Gainey. "While we've had numerous neighborhood plans that have shaped our communities, now is the time to understand how all these pieces fit together. From public health to housing, from environmental justice to economic opportunity – we need a unified vision that builds on our past work while charting a bold path forward. This isn't just another plan – it's about bringing every voice to the table to create a shared blueprint for the next generation of Pittsburghers."
The initiative emphasizes a "Just Transition" approach, addressing historical inequities while creating pathways for sustainable development. Key focus areas include housing affordability and neighborhood preservation, environmental justice and climate action, economic opportunity and jobs, transportation and infrastructure improvements, public health and safety, internet and broadband access, and urban technology.
A Steering Committee of civic and community leaders will guide Pittsburgh 2050. Committee members represent diverse neighborhoods, businesses, institutions, and community organizations. They will oversee the planning process, review recommendations, and support implementation. Members have expertise in key areas, including housing, economic development, early childhood and education, environmental justice, and public health.
