Incident Type: Vehicle Collision
Location: Zone 5
Summary:
Just before 3:00 p.m., Pittsburgh Police, Fire, and EMS responded to the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Apple Street along the border of Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar and Homewood North for reports of a single-vehicle collision with possible entrapment.
Arriving responders located an overturned vehicle down a steep embankment, approximately 40 feet below the roadway.
The driver, an adult female, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The initial investigation shows the victim's sedan was travelling southbound on Lincoln Avenue when it crossed the centerline, drove through a parking lot at the corner of the intersection, and crossed Apple Street. The vehicle then stuck a low concrete barrier and fence on the southern side of Apple and became airborne. It hit a tree on its decent down the hill, flipped over, and finally came to rest, upside down, on a dilapidated garage below.
It was a complicated and lengthy process to remove the vehicle from the garage rooftop as the structure was unsound and dangerous for crews. A crane was called in to help with the vehicle's extraction.
Lincoln Avenue and Apple Way were closed throughout the operation.
The Collision Investigation Unit responded to investigate. The investigation is ongoing.
