Original post:

Multiple Pittsburgh Police, Fire and EMS units responded to the Liberty Tunnel for reports of a collision involving a total of nine vehicles at approximately 5:30 p.m.
The initial investigation shows a truck traveling through the inbound side, struck several vehicles before emerging from the tunnel at PJ McCardle Roadway. Medics transported the male driver to the hospital in critical condition.

EMS rescue crews using special tools worked to extricate five more people trapped inside the other affected vehicles. Medics transported those patients to the hospital in stable condition with various injuries.

Officers with the Traffic Division then worked to assist drivers who were stuck inside the tunnel as a result of the crash, with vehicles having to slowly reverse out of the inbound side to Route 51.

Both sides of the tunnel were eventually cleared of vehicles by 9 p.m.

Pittsburgh Public Safety thanks everyone for their patience during this painstaking process.

The tunnel remains closed to traffic while the Collision Investigation Unit completes its investigation. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.
