Be A Middle School Mentor (BAMSM): The Be A Middle School Mentor Program is the largest mentoring project in the region's history, initiated by the leadership of the Youth Futures Commission and developed through the collaboration of United Way of Allegheny CountyPittsburgh Public Schools, and the Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

A little more about BAMSM…

  • The recruitment window for BAMSM mentors is from June to December.
  • New mentors must complete one-time 3 hour training with Mentoring Partnership.
  • Employees are required to obtain clearances/background check.
  • Per the MMI executive order, participating mentor employees receive 2 hours Approved Leave (AP) time each week to participate in the program.

Everybody Wins! (EW): The Reading is Fundamental Pittsburgh's Everybody Wins! Program is an affiliate of Everybody Wins! USA; EW is a national literacy and mentoring organization that strives to build literacy skills and a love of reading among elementary school students.  This lunchtime literacy and mentoring program pairs elementary school students with volunteers to share conversation and good books for one hour a week.

A little more about EW…

  • The recruitment window for EW is rolling, but it is best to sign up over the summer through September in order to be placed with a student.
  • Our mentors are asked to complete one, one-hour long orientation.
  • Employees are required to obtain clearances/background check most volunteer programs reimburse your for these expenses.
  • Per the MMI Executive Order, participating mentor employees receive up to 2 hours Approved Leave (AP) time each week to participate in the program, which includes 1 hour of travel time total and 1 hour to read with students.

mentor2.0 (m2.0): New for 2015-2016! The mentor2.0 program is through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh and is a technology-enriched, email supported one-to-one youth mentoring program directly targeting students. Through partnerships between Big Brothers Big Sisters, schools, and employees, the m2.0 program will support high-impact mentoring relationships aimed at providing students with the support and guidance needed to succeed throughout high school, college, and in the workforce. The m2.0 prgram maintains the quality mentoring that Big Brothers Big Sisters is known for through one-to-one relationships, providing professional relationship support, and maintaining a focus on safety that benefit of the mentee and mentor. m2.0 expands this relationship by using technology for much of the interaction between the mentee and mentor, reducing the in-person time commitment to once every month.

  • The m2.0 recruitment process is rolling but applications are encouraged to be in by August.
  • Our mentors are requried to complete one, two hour long training.
  • Employees are required to obtain clearances/background check.
  • Participating m2.0 employees receive 30 minutes each week for correspondence and up to 2 hours if during work time hours of approved leave (AP) time to participate in the program.*
