What are we doing?
In partnership with Metro 21, the city executed a project named “Integrating building data with critical analytics and interfaces for a high performance built environment” This project uses utility data (monthly electric, gas, water bills) from 140 buildings to help assess energy usage. In addition, ten air quality monitors were deployed to learn about air quality inside city buildings and to collect data on air quality. The data collected for this project will encourage data-driven decision making and help reduce building energy consumption while ensuring better air quality for building occupants.

What have we learned?
In order to report live data, a City-County Building Energy Use diagnostic dashboard was created to report indoor air quality and temperature, outside temperature, humidity, and CO2 parts per million equivalent, and environmental quality in the City-County building. Visitors and city employees can see the dashboard in the front lobby of the 6th floor of the City-County Building.

What are we doing?
The city deployed 10 air quality sensors in five different city buildings, the data collected from the sensors is visible on a city dashboard. This data shows different levels of air quality in the building facilities providing a reality check of about indoor air quality in city buildings.

What have we learned?
The City-County Building Energy Use Dashboard is part of a larger "Energy Intelligence Network Initiative" currently in development. The goal of this project is to improve data quality and access in order to better understand and thus reduce the environmental impacts of facilities. Deploying pilot projects on the sixth floor is the next step in developing the Energy Intelligence Network. Air quality is an ongoing concern for the city of Pittsburgh. The deployment of Speck Monitors in various city facilities has helped capture air quality data that will be used to create a better understanding of how air quality changes based on factors such as weather, time of day, or seasonal changes.

What are we doing?
The city of Pittsburgh Performance Benchmarking Legislation will require non-residential buildings larger than 50,000 square feet in the city of Pittsburgh to disclose energy and water usage information. This will allow the city to collect data about utilities and for owners and tenants to learn about their building's performance. By acquiring this kind of data the city can start benchmarking energy and water consumption city-wide. In addition, the city can provide guidance on how building owners can save money by reducing utility costs. The ordinance will be decided by city council in the fall of 2016.

What are we doing?
The Eco Innovation district is an urban plan that intends to revitalize Uptown Pittsburgh and transform it into an innovative urban ecosystem where it will enhance equitable land use, attract and guide new investment, expand the local economy, reduce the city’s environmental footprint, and ensure equity and access to local opportunities. The Eco Innovation plan is being developed by a series of local and regional stakeholders and led by Interface Studio consulting firm.

What are we doing?
PGH Lab is a program that enables collaboration between the city of Pittsburgh and local startups. This program encourages startup companies to test their products and services in the city for a limited engagement of three months. Companies can suggest solutions for civic issues in the areas of: Citizen Engagement, city Operations, Climate Change and the Environment, and Other. Companies with innovative clean energy technology solutions are invited to apply and help the city meet its Climate Action Plan by 2030.

What have we learned?
The PGH Lab 2016 review committee selected three startup companies to become part of the PGH Lab 2016 Cohort. Startup companies can pilot their products/services at the City for three months. All three companies offer products that can make tangible social and environmental impact in Pittsburgh. Two of the companies match the initiatives that the Office of Sustainability and Resilience is currently working on.

What are we doing?
The city of Pittsburgh, affiliated agencies, and the Green Building Alliance have been working through their Green Garage Initiative to retrofit lighting to LED technology in city owned buildings. In addition, the city and partners are working towards [2] developing a lighting infrastructure fund for other municipal and privately owned garages.

What have we learned?
After retrofitting the city garages buildings in January, city garage buildings saw a reduction of approximately 60 percent cut in energy consumption and costs. This places city garages 20 percent lower to national medium average for parking garages energy use. This initiative has the main goal to invest in a sustainable infrastructure that will save energy, reduce operational costs, and provide better customer service.

What are we doing?
The city is converting 100% of streetlights to LED technology in order to help reduces utility expenditure and implement green infrastructure. The city began to switch to LED technology in 2010 starting with the business districts or 15 percent. The residential areas are still a work in progress.

What have we learned?
15 percent of Pittsburgh street lights have been changed to LED technology. All business districts in Pittsburgh are now powered by green technology.

The Pittsburgh 2030 District is a nationally recognized collaborative of local community and high performance buildings in Downtown and Oakland that aim to reduce energy and water consumption, greenhouse emissions, and improve indoor air quality. One of its goal is increasing the return of investment for business owners. The city is making strides in this challenge by taking the necessary steps to improve energy and water efficiency while understanding how to better buildings’ indoor air quality.

What have we learned?
Through the Office of Sustainability and Resilience the city is working towards meeting 2030 District challenges through various initiatives. The city of Pittsburgh is working towards reducing energy consumption in city garages through the city participation in the Green Garage initiative or by proposing a city-wide benchmarking legislation to collect buildings' energy consumption, to developing an Energy Intelligence Network within the City-County Building through Implementation of Air Quality Speck monitors.

What are we doing?
The city of Pittsburgh is committed to reducing emissions within the scope of its facilities, operations, and infrastructure. The city will continue to assess potential capacity for renewable energy installations on city-owned properties. Currently 30 percent of the city annual electricity purchases is non-certified renewable energy sourced through Western Pennsylvania Energy Consortium. The city has increased its renewable energy purchases since 2008 and will adopt a renewable energy purchase mandate that will commit for a 100% renewable energy purchase by 2030.
