City of Pittsburgh Residency Requirements & Verification

Applicable law requires applicants to live one (1) hour from the City-County Building located downtown Pittsburgh. All applicants must swear to meet this eligibility requirement. Falsification of job eligibility is a violation of Civil Service Commission Rules. Any willful misstatement, falsification, or concealment in respect to an application shall render the same null and void. Subject to discretion of the Commission, a person making such false application may be prohibited from making any future application in the classified service, and if employed, may be dismissed from employment, and may be prosecuted.

NOTE: You can provide proof of residency by attaching proof to your application, via email, or via fax. Human Resources hours are currently restricted due to the Covid-19 pandemic and we are not accepting documents or forms in person.

The Department of Human Resources and Civil Service will accept the following documents to verify legal residence if you are selected to be processed for an upcoming academy class.

Two of the following documents, showing the city address, must also be presented:

*a letter from the representative company confirming it is establishing service for the new resident is acceptable.

Prior to purchasing or renting a place of residence, applicants and employees may call to verify that the property is located within the City of Pittsburgh:
