OFFICE OF EQUAL PROTECTION

One Step Process

What is the One Step Program?

When a person using a wheelchair or scooter, or a person with a physical impediment, wants to enter a store, just one step in front of the entrance makes it impossible for that person to offer patronage to the business. However, the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was passed in 1990 and took effect in January 1992, promises the user a right of safe entry to places of public accommodation.

The One Step Project will show you how you can make your business more accessible to consumers who use wheelchairs, scooters or have physical impediments. The packet includes resources for a business to perform the necessary modifications that are available through the City of Pittsburgh, along with tax incentives from the Federal Government.

The One Step Simplified Checklist and Forms describe ways that your business as well as the consumers can benefit from making these accommodations.
