Cobbler World - District 6
Business Name: Cobbler World
Business Location: 1059 Penn Ave, Downtown
Terina Hicks started Cobbler World in April 2014 after being laid off. She had been baking since she was 14, a skill she learned from her mother, and a passion stemming from the lovely peach cobblers her mother put on the table for holidays.
The business launched in earnest in October 2014 after Ms. Hicks received her servesafe designation from Allegheny County Health Department, and an extensive research process around what potential competitors were and were not producing. She learned that our area has a dearth of purveyors of nostalgic confections like pineapple upside down cakes, banana pudding, and lemon meringue pies, not to mention cobblers!
In order to build up brand recognition, and some paying customers, Ms. Hicks hit the road, visiting events all over the area being held by big companies looking for vendors. Eventually she landed a deal to distribute her products in the Penn Hills Giant Eagle, followed by four different Shop n Save locations, as well as numerous local restaurants! Also helpful along the way were appearances on Sally Wiggin's show "Bakeries of the 'Burgh", in Pittsburgh Magazine, and local newspapers. The even tried out for Shark Tank recently!
Ms. Hicks credits a few great local organizations and people with helping her along her path to success. The Hill CDC provided guidance and mentorship, Soul Pitt Media and Marlee Media helped get the word out, the Sports and Exhibition Authority (https://www.pgh-sea.com/index.aspx) has been a supporter, Ms. Hicks also took advantage of the Catapult Program offered in Larimer, and soon other neighborhoods with support of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, and found support from Classic Events (https://www.facebook.com/Classic-Events-123142771093690/), Wilkinsburg CDC, and her family – husband Joseph Hicks and sons Eric Folks and Robert McMillan!
