UPDATE: Police Officers Injured Moving Large Crowds From Carson Street

Date: August 18, 2019
Incident Type: Crowd Management
Location: Zone 3
Summary:

Multiple Pittsburgh Police units were called to respond to a large and disorderly crowd between the 1500 and 1700 blocks of E. Carson Street just before 2:15 a.m.

Officers were faced with large and unruly crowds that had flooded into the street, grinding traffic to a halt from 10th St. to 18th St. in both directions. The crowd itself was surrounding any vehicles that were in the street.

One officer was writing a traffic citation in an emergency lane when a driver drove over his left foot when he refused to wait. Another officer trying to help his colleague injured his own knee. Both officers were transported by EMS to UPMC Mercy hospital in stable condition for treatment.

Two males were arrested in connection with this incident.

The crowd continued to grow and become more disorderly, refusing to leave the area. Additional police units were called in to help disperse them and officers gave several amplified orders to leave the streets.

Eventually, police formed a skirmish line to slowly move people off the street. There was no resistance from the large crowd and no injuries.

Just before 3 a.m. the majority of the crowds had moved out, allowing traffic to begin moving. The scene was secured by police before 3:15 a.m.
