Just after 2 a.m. Pittsburgh Police officers from Zone 5 spotted a vehicle believed involved in an armed carjacking earlier in the evening on Race Street and began following it.
When they activated their lights and sirens the vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed well ahead of the officers, before crashing at East Liberty Blvd. and Frankstown Avenue.
The vehicle caught fire, but police were able to extinguish the fire and safely extricate the occupants. Medics transported the male driver and the male passenger to the hospital with unknown injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
