Firefighters were called to an apartment building in the 2600 block of Churchview Avenue just after 1 a.m. for reports of smoke throughout the building. Residents were evacuating the structure upon their arrival.
Once inside, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from one apartment, where they located a male victim on the ground and a recliner chair on fire. Crews removed the victim from the building and Medic 12 transported him to the hospital in critical condition.
The fire was contained to one apartment, but seven others sustained minor smoke and moderate water damage. A female occupant from the building was evaluated for smoke inhalation, but not taken to the hospital.
The Fire Investigation Unit was on scene. The cause is believed to be accidental.
