Just before midnight on June 12, Zone 2 officers responded to the Shell gas station at 1605 5th Avenue for a report of male with a firearm. While en route, dispatch notified officers the male had been pointing the gun at several people.
Once on scene, police did not observe anyone matching the description provided to them. After securing the safety of everyone in the gas station store and parking lot area, officers were then advised over the radio that a male was spotted brandishing a firearm on nearby Vine Street, followed by the sound of a single gunshot in the area of Vine and Our Way. Officers proceeded to clear bystanders from the area when they spotted a male matching the description of the actor flee up Vine near Colwell Street. Soon after, they heard rustling in an adjacent wooded area and came across a single grey shoe on a pathway along the wood line.
Police set up a perimeter and soon after a male wearing one shoe exited the woods and walked directly toward officers positioned on Colwell where he was detained. The Mobile Crime Unit processed a discarded firearm found near a dumpster on Our Way.
Kevin Tyrone Bennett, 50, was arrested and transported to the ACJ.
He is charged with Discharging a Firearm, Persons Not to Possess, and Tampering with Evidence.
