Hazmat Responds to U.S. Steel Tower Downtown for Leak

Date: April 5, 2023
Incident Type: HazMat
Location: Downtown
Summary:

Just after 7:00 p.m.,  HazMat responded to the U.S. Steel Tower for reports of caustic liquid leaking from the building.

Fire, EMS, and Police all responded to Grant Street, and several area roads were block off while crews worked.

The leak occurred in a column of the building that is filled with fire protection fluid, after a contractor performing work on the building drilled a hole.

Three people, including two police officers, were treated for minor exposures on-scene, as the liquid can be a skin irritant.

During efforts to seal the leak, crews also battled inclement weather.

At this point, the leak has been slowed but not stopped, largely due to pressure within the vessel.

HazMat is collecting the fluid and utilizing vacuum trucks to contain it, while maintaining contact with partners at ALCOSAN and the DEP.

There is no threat to public safety at this time. Updates will be provided as they become available.
