Pittsburgh EMS, Police, and Fire Respond to Rescue on the Mon Wharf

Date: January 28, 2024
Incident Type: River Rescue
Location: Zone 2

Just before 9:30 p.m., all Pittsburgh Public Safety bureaus were dispatched to the Mon Wharf for reports of multiple people trapped by the rising waters of the Monongahela River.

Upon arrival, crews were able to visualize the camp but only one person was seen. That individual, an adult male, was rescued by ladder. He was uninjured and needed no medical care. He was directed to a nearby shelter for additional services.

Although no other people were seen, River Rescue divers waded through the flood waters to the remaining tents and physically inspected each one for any other possible victims. However, none were located as all the tents were empty.

Out of an abundance of caution, the River Rescue team then travelled around Point State Park and along the Allegheny River to ensure no other people were in danger.

Two individuals were located. They did not need to be rescued, but they were also directed to an area shelter until the water level falls.

On scene were Pittsburgh River Rescue, Medics 3 and 14, Rescue 2, EMS Unit 503, Pittsburgh Police, Point Park University Police, Fire Engine 4, Fire Truck 4 and Fire Battalion Chief 2.
