UPDATE: Firefighters Respond to 1-Alarm Structure Fire Turned Fatal

Summary:

Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire responded to multiple calls for a structure fire on the 2000 block of Pioneer Avenue just before 10:30 p.m. 

When they arrived on scene there was heavy smoke with flames emerging from the back of the structure. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire quickly and gain entrance to the two- storey residence. 

During their search of the residence they discovered a female who was deceased on the first floor of the home. There were also two pets, a dog and a cat, that died in the fire. Another cat survived. Animal Care and Control was on scene to tend to the animals.

The Fire Investigation Unit will investigate the cause of the fire. Pittsburgh Police Homicide detectives were also on scene.

The investigation continues.

UPDATE: 10:00 a.m. 2/12/20 The initial finding by investigators with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is that this fire is believed to be accidental in nature, originating in the kitchen area of the home. Any additional updates will be posted in this space.
