Updates

As part of our commitment to transparency in reporting, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police has begun issuing public reports, interactive visualizations and data.  It is our intention to continue to do so and to expand our efforts to make data readily available. In order to increase our ability to collect, query and report data, we are aggressively improving our technology and analytic infrastructure.  On occasion, these improvements, or changes in the way data are collected, may result in the discovery that previously-released data are inaccurate or incomplete.  This is the case with the following data included in two reports issued in August of 2015:

Violence in the City of Pittsburgh: Five-Year Trend 2010-2014

This report examines violence that occurred between 2010 and 2014 in the City of Pittsburgh. Violent incidents include homicides, aggravated assaults with a gun, shootings and calls for shots fired. The report assesses trends over time, by geography and by race and gender of victims and perpetrators. For homicides, the motives and clearance rates are also reported.

Violence in the City of Pittsburgh: 2015 January-June

This report examines violence that occurred in the first six months of 2015 compared to the same time period in recent years. Violent incidents include homicides, aggravated assaults with a gun, shootings and calls for shots fired.  The report assesses trends over time, by geography and by race and gender of victims and perpetrators.

Violence in the City of Pittsburgh, 2015

September 2016
Homicides in the City of Pittsburgh decreased between 2014 (70) and 2015(56); however, this number is still nine percent higher than the average of the past five years.  Pittsburgh’s 2015 homicide rate was slightly below the average rate of the 14 Pittsburgh benchmark cities. Shootings decreased in 2015, but there were increases in both aggravated assaults with a firearm and calls for shots fired. Information about homicide victims and offenders is also provided in this report, as well as an analysis of where and when violence occurred.

Violence in the City of Pittsburgh, First Six Months of 2016

September 2016
There were 29 homicides in the City of Pittsburgh in the first six months of 2016, which represents a 45 percent increase from the same six-month period in 2015 and a 33 percent increase over the average of the first six months of the years 2010 through 2015. Calls for shots fired also increased from 2015 and from the six-year average, but both shootings and aggravated assaults with a firearm decreased. Demographic information about homicide victims and offenders, the location of homicides and calls for shots fired, and details about when violence occurred are also provided in this report.
