Details: Join your PGH Park Rangers for a guided hike around Pittsburgh's Parks! These hikes are a slow pace and low-milage, perfect for new hikers! All hikes are the first Thursday of each month lasting from 10:30AM-12PM. All hikes will be a slow-to-light pace with few stopping points throughout! Participants are urged to wear closed toe shoes, sunscreen, and pack a water bottle for this hike series. Registration is not required but recommended for updates and cancellations due to inclement weather. Registration for all hikes open on March 1st!

Location: Frick Park, Bowling Greens (Use nearest residential address of 7371 Reynolds Street)
Time: 5-6:30PM
Details: Over the course of the summer, this trail series will explore different trails around Frick Park giving everyone new ways to experience the park from multiple different entrances! Friendly, leashed dogs are welcomed.

This hike will be meeting at the bowling green area of Frick Park (use residential address of 7317 Reynolds Street) to explore the northern most section of the park. Ample street parking is available along Reynolds Street and a portable bathroom unit will be available. Please pack your own water. This hike will be approximately 1.45 miles long and will be a gradual pace with a 125ft elevation gain. All trails will be wide and covered in mostly compressed limestone.

Details: Join your Park Rangers for a guided hike around Pittsburgh’s newest city park. Hays Woods consists of 626 acres of undeveloped woodlands; a perfect place for a Tree ID hike! We will cover about 1.5 miles on intermediate terrain. Come prepared to walk on narrow single-track trails, some uneven terrain and some hills. We suggest bringing water, closed toed shoes and long pants. Leashed dogs are welcome. Registration recommended for details and cancelation notifications.

Join us for our FINAL introduction to Frick Park Trails for the 2026 season! This hike will be meeting at the bowling green area of Frick Park (use residential address of 7317 Reynolds Street) to explore the northern most section of the park. Ample street parking is available along Reynolds Street and a portable bathroom unit will be available. Please pack your own water. During this hike we will learn a loop path to connect the Point Breeze side of the park to the Regent Square community. Participants should prepare for a 2-mile loop with 184ft elevation gain. Terrains will vary including crush limestone pathways, descending wooden steps, and crossing asphalt covered roads.

Location: Greenleaf Trailhead (1870 Greenleaf St, Pittsburgh, PA 15211)

Details: Join a Park Ranger for a guided hike through the scenic trails of Emerald View Park, where woodland tranquility meets a touch of city edge. This approximately 2.5-mile route gains about 367 feet in elevation and is best suited for fit hikers of all experience levels, making it a great outing for folks looking to explore one of Pittsburgh’s most unique green spaces while getting a little cardio. Along the way, you’ll travel narrow, rustic trails that wind through lush forest, with moments of urban character woven into the landscape and a surprise, breathtaking skyline view that makes the climb worthwhile.

Participants should wear closed toe shoes suitable for uneven terrain and bring water to stay hydrated. The group will meet at the Greenleaf Trailhead parking lot (across from 1870 Greenleaf Street) where a portable toilet is available nearby. Come ready to move, learn, and enjoy a refreshing outdoor experience led by a knowledgeable Park Ranger.

9/20: Riverview Conservation Crew

Location: Riverview Park Visitor Center (1 Riverview Ave)

Details: Join Pittsburgh Park rangers in improving the ecology of our beautiful city parks! We will be removing invasive plant species from the park to stop them from spreading and from further upsetting the balance of local ecosystems. No experience necessary! Participants will receive a brief training on how to properly weed out these plants and how to use the provided tools. Please dress for the weather, wear closed toed shoes, and remember to stay hydrated and bring water bottles.

9/21: Moon Hike and Observatory Moon Viewing

Location: Allegheny Observatory (159 Riverview Ave)
Time: 7:00PM-9:00PM
Details: Meet at the Allegheny Observatory where we will begin our hike as the sun sets and the moon rises. The hike will be about a mile but will take us an hour with stops to discuss nocturnal animals with Pittsburgh Park Rangers. There are elevation changes and some rugged trails, please wear closed toed shoes. After the hike we will briefly tour the Observatory before viewing the moon through the telescope. This is a very weather dependent event and will be canceled even if it’s just cloudy.

Details: Over the course of the summer, this trail series will explore different trails around Frick Park giving everyone new ways to experience the park from multiple different entrances! Friendly, leashed dogs are welcomed.

This hike will be meeting at the Biddle Building in Frick Park at 800 South Braddock Ave in Regent Square at 5:00. Parking is available in the parking lot or along the street. This hike will explore the Regent Square side of the park. This hike will be about 2.2 miles and be an easy-pace hike. Most of the hike will be a downhill graded slope or flat terrain, however, will require participants to take a staircase at the end of the hike back to the parking lot. A bathroom unit will be available midway through the hike.

Details: Over the course of the summer, this trail series will explore different trails around Frick Park giving everyone new ways to experience the park from multiple different entrances! Friendly, leashed dogs are welcomed.

This hike will be meeting at the Biddle Building in Frick Park at 800 South Braddock Ave in Regent Square at 5:00. Parking is available in the parking lot or along the street. This hike will explore a single track trail and how to easily make a 1.9 mile loop with it. Participants should be prepared for narrow trails with uneven terrain in addition be prepared for steps. The hike will move at a slow pace with a gradual downhill slope for most of the hike. We will be crossing the fern hollow bridge so please be comfortable with heights. There will be a bathroom and water available at the start of the hike.

Details: Join your Park Rangers for a guided hike around Pittsburgh’s newest city park. Hays Woods consists of 626 acres of undeveloped woodlands, with almost 15 miles of legacy trails. On this evening hike we will cover 2 to 3 miles, discussing the magnificent trees of Hays. Come prepared to walk on narrow single-track trails, some uneven terrain and some hills. We suggest bringing water, closed toed shoes and long pants. Leashed dogs are welcome. Registration recommended for details and cancelation notifications.

Location: Allegheny Observatory (159 Riverview Ave)

Details: Meet at the Allegheny Observatory where we will begin our hike as the sun sets and the moon rises. The hike will be about a mile but will take us an hour with stops to discuss nocturnal animals with Pittsburgh Park Rangers. There are elevation changes and some rugged trails, please wear closed toed shoes. After the hike we will briefly tour the Observatory before viewing the moon through the telescope. This is a very weather dependent event and will be canceled even if it’s just cloudy.

Details: Join your PGH Park Rangers for a guided hike around Pittsburgh's Parks! These hikes are a slow pace and low-milage, perfect for new hikers! All hikes are the first Thursday of each month lasting from 10:30AM-12PM. All hikes will be a slow-to-light pace with few stopping points throughout! Participants are urged to wear closed toe shoes, sunscreen, and pack a water bottle for this hike series. Registration is notrequiredbut recommended for updates and cancellations due to inclement weather. Registration for all hikes open on March 1st! This hike will be at Hays Woods. Use the nearest residentialaddress of 1015Agnew Road. This hike will be an out-and back hike and be approximately 1.5 miles long. Details: Join your PGH Park Rangers for a guided hike around Pittsburgh's Parks! These hikes are a slow pace and low-milage, perfect for new hikers! All hikes are the first Thursday of each month lasting from 10:30AM-12PM. All hikes will be a slow-to-light pace with few stopping points throughout! Participants are urged to wear closed toe shoes, sunscreen, and pack a water bottle for this hike series. 6/4: Introduction to Frick Park Trails

Location: Frick Park, Blue Slide Playground (Nearest Residential Address: 2466 Beechwood Blvd)
Time: 5-6:30PM
Details: Over the course of the summer, this trail series will explore different trails around Frick Park giving everyone new ways to experience the park from multiple different entrances!Friendly, leashed dogs are welcomed.

This hike will be meeting at the Blue Slide Playground entrance to Frick Park (use nearest residential address of: 2466 Beechwood Blvd.) at 5:00. Street parking is plentiful and/or park on English Lane (behind the playground). During this hike we will explore the Squirrel Hill entrance to the park and explore the trail networks beyond the paved Riverview trail segment. This hike will be about 2.2 miles long. There will be a port-a-john near the entrance, participants should bring their own water bottles. This hike will be a short descent and a very gradual slope for about half the hike. We will walk at a slow to moderate pace. Please be prepared for mud and wear closed toe shoes with good traction.

Details: Meet at the Allegheny Observatory where we will begin ourhike as the sun setsand the moon rises. The hike will be about a mile but will take us an hour with stops to discuss nocturnal animals with Pittsburgh Park Rangers. There are elevation changes and some rugged trails, please wear closed toed shoes. After the hike we will briefly tour the Observatory before viewing the moon through the telescope. This hike will explore the Clayton Hill, North and South Clayton Trails and will be under 2 miles in distance. This hike will be predominately flat, however will have varied terrain including grass, mud, crushed stone, and asphalt.

5/26: Moon Hike and Observatory Moon Viewing

Location: Allegheny Observatory (159 Riverview Ave)
Time: 8:00PM-10:00PM
Details: Meet at the Allegheny Observatory where we will begin our sunset hike as it transitions into night. Please keep flashlights at a minimum as we hope to navigate the trails using just the light of the moon, though low impact flashlights can be provided. The hike will be about a mile but will take us an hour with stops to discuss nocturnal animals with Pittsburgh Park Rangers. There are elevation changes and some rugged trails, please wear closed toed shoes. After the hike we will briefly tour the Observatory before viewing the moon through the telescope. This is a very weather dependent event and will be canceled even if it’s just cloudy.

Location: Frick Park, lower Frick Park Parking Lot (Use nearest residential address of 1027 Lancaster Ave and proceed down the hill to the parking lot)

Details: Join your PGH Park Rangers for a guided hike around Pittsburgh's Parks! These hikes are a slow pace and low-milage, perfect for new hikers! All hikes are the first Thursday of each month lasting from 10:30AM-12PM. All hikes will be a slow-to-light pace with few stopping points throughout! Participants are urged to wear closed toe shoes, sunscreen, and pack a water bottle for this hike series. Registration is not required but recommended for updates and cancellations due to inclement weather. Registration for all hikes open on March 1st!

Join Frick Park Rangers for a gradual walk around Frick Park wetlands. Meet in the lower Frick Park Parking Lot (Use nearest residential address of 1027 Lancaster Ave and proceed down the hill to the parking lot). This hike will be focused on the historical Nine Mile Run wetland restoration. This hike will occur on different terrains including gravel, boardwalks, and pavement. This hike will be under 1.5 miles long. Please be prepared for potentially slippery surfaces and a very slight incline. A port-a-john will be available on site however a water fountain will not.

Details: Join a Park Ranger for a guided hike through the trails of Grandview Park in Emerald View Park and experience one of Pittsburgh’s most scenic woodland corridors. This roughly one-mile walk gains about 213 feet in elevation and is open to all participants, making it a great option for curious beginners and seasoned trail-goers alike. Along the way, you’ll travel narrow, rustic trails with a peaceful forest feel, accented by touches of urban character and striking skyline views that make this park uniquely Pittsburgh.

During the hike, we’ll explore the history of Grandview Park and take a closer look at how invasive plant species are managed to protect native ecosystems. Please wear closed toe shoes suitable for uneven terrain and bring water to stay hydrated. 3/20: First Day of Spring Hike at Emerald View Park

Location: Olympia Park (Use nearest residential address of 500 Hallock St. Pittsburgh, PA 15211)
Time: 10:00AM-11:00AM
Details: Celebrate the first day of spring with a Park Ranger guided hike through the trails of Olympia Park in Emerald View Park. This welcoming, one-mile outing gains about 141 feet in elevation and is open to all who want to enjoy fresh air, woodland scenery, and good company. The trails are typically narrow and rustic, offering a peaceful forest feel and a chance to experience early signs of the season. Please wear closed toe shoes suitable for natural surfaces and bring water to stay comfortable along the way. We will meet at the parking lot on Hallock St. (nearest residential address: 500 Hallock St). Come ready to explore, learn, and welcome spring on the trail.

3/22: Riverview Conservation Crew

Location: Riverview Park Visitor Center (1 Riverview Ave)
Time: 10:00AM-12:00PM
Details: Join Pittsburgh Park rangers in improving the ecology of our beautiful city parks! We will be removing invasive plant species from the park to stop them from spreading and from further upsetting the balance of local ecosystems. No experience necessary! Participants will receive a brief training on how to properly weed out these plants and how to use the provided tools. Please dress for the weather, wear closed toed shoes, and remember to stay hydrated even if it’s cool out, we will still we working up a sweat.

3/25: Moon Hike and Observatory Moon Viewing

Location: Allegheny Observatory (159 Riverview Ave)
Time: 7:00PM-9:00PM
Details: Meet at the Allegheny Observatory where we will begin our night hike. Please keep flashlights as a minimum as we hope to navigate the trails using just the light of the moon, though low impact flashlights can be provided. The hike will be about a mile, but will take us an hour at a slow steady pace with stops to discuss nocturnal animals with Pittsburgh Park Rangers. There are elevation changes and some rugged trails, please wear closed toed shoes. After the hike we will briefly tour the Observatory before viewing the moon through the telescope. This is a very weather dependent event and will be canceled even if it’s just cloudy.

3/29: Spring Hike

Location: Anderson Playground-Schenley Park
Time: 10:00AM- 11:30 PM
Details: Time to brush off the cobwebs and head outside! We will be hiking around 1.5-2 miles. We will be looking out for anything popping up along our hike with the start of spring. The hike will be a light pace with stops along the way. Weather might still be cold so make sure to buddle up!

2/14: Great Backyard Bird Count

Location: Grandview Park, Bandstand (499 Bailey Ave)
Time: 8:00AM- 9:00PM
Details: Join Pittsburgh Park Rangers for the Great Backyard Bird Count, an all-ages, in-person birding program focused on observing and counting local birds while enjoying time outdoors. Participants will meet at the Bandstand and spend one hour exploring the park together. No experience is required; bring your own binoculars or use our loaners. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear, as there are stairs and some elevation changes along the route.

Details: Come join Rangers and help remove Spotted Lanternfly Egg masses! Participants will learn how to recognize and remove egg masses while picking up litter from Frick Park. Attendees should dress for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, and be prepared to gradually hike (less than 1.5 miles) off trail and on uneven surfaces.

1/3: Moon Hike and Observatory Moon Viewing

Time: 7:00PM-9:00PM
Details: Meet at the Allegheny Observatory where Park Rangers will lead you on an hour hike under the light of the moon. We will try to rely on the light of the moon and not use flashlights, but some low impact lights can be provided per request. The trail will be moderate with elevation changes, please dress for the weather and wear proper footwear. We will only hike about a mile and take an hour to do so, stopping and talking about nocturnal animals along the way.
Afterwards, we will take a quick tour of the Allegheny Observatory before looking at the moon through one of it's historical telescopes! This is a completely weather dependent event, and it will be canceled even if it's just too cloudy. Please register with an email where you can be updated about cancelations. We do this almost every month, so check this eventbrite page next month if it does get canceled.

Mission

Pittsburgh Park Rangers work year-round as liaisons between the public and the City of Pittsburgh to advocate and promote City Parks. Park Rangers are responsible for park related ordinance enforcement, educational programming and oversight of all Pittsburgh City Parks. Through daily patrols, continual safety education, and emergency response assistance they ensure safety for all park patrons.

Park Presence

Pittsburgh Park Rangers have jurisdiction over all Pittsburgh Parks and are actively present in all five regional parks including Emerald View, Frick, Highland, Riverview, and Schenley Parks. Rangers are also present in smaller parks including Allegheny Commons, Market Square, Mellon Park, and Westinghouse Park amongst others.

Rules and Regulations

Park Rangers are authorized to enforce and issue citations for any violation to park ordinances which can be found under the municipal code section 473 and 633. These rules include but are not limited to:

Park hours are 6AM-11PM unless otherwise noted.
All pets must remain on a leash throughout the park unless in an approved off-leash exercise area (OLEA) site.
Any disfigurement or removal of park amenities is prohibited. This includes natural resources such as lumber, plants, and/or seeds.
All forms of tobacco are prohibited within City Parks. This includes but is not limited to cigarettes, cigars, vapes, e-cigarettes, and chewing tobacco.
Interfering with any wildlife is prohibited, this includes hunting, trapping, feeding, and/or harvesting.
Proper permits are required for any pavilion rental or special event happening within parks.
Drones and Model Airplanes are prohibited in City Parks
Grilling is only permitted in designated grilling areas. Campfires are prohibited without a permit.

Programming

The Pittsburgh Park Rangers organize numerous educational activities both in parks and classroom settings. Activities include nature related tabling activities, star parties and guided hikes! If you are interested in setting up a Park Ranger sponsored program feel free to send us an e-mail!
