2/17: Nature Hike with Ranger George

Location: Schenley Park Visitor's Center, 101 Panther Hollow Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 
Time: 10:00AM to 11:30AM
Details: Join Ranger George on a 2-mile hike in Schenley Park. We will hike the Lower and Upper Panther Hollow Trails to make a loop beginning and ending at the Schenley Park Visitor's Center. Feel free to bring binoculars, field guides and any questions about the nature or history of Schenley Park!
The hike will be moderate difficulty with a long, gradual downhill with a steep hill at the end of the hike. We will make a few stops at points of interest. Bathrooms and water will be available at the start and end of the hike.
Please wear weather appropriate clothing. The hike will happen unless there are unsafe weather conditions. Hike may also be shortened based on weather conditions.
Ages 5 and up are welcome.

Details: Interested in owls? Join your Frick Park Rangers for a nighttime owl prowl! Participants will hear a quick, informative talk about local owl species, get an up-close look at taxidermy and owl skulls, and hear some owl calls. Following the talk, rangers will lead attendees on a walk to nearby owl hotspots to check if anyone is home! Calls will be played again to see if any owls are willing to say hello.

Details: Soil is full of life and sustains life! There is so much more than meets the eye when it comes to the dirt we walk on. Soil is the foundation to our ecosystems and has mini ecosystems of its own! Join Pittsburgh Park Rangers on a one hour hike with three 10 minute stops where we will discuss some of the creatures here in our parks who call soil "home". This will be an easy to moderate hike, with some elevation changes and some moderately steep trails. Please wear hiking shoes and dress for the weather.

Location: Riverview Park Visitor Center, 1 Riverview Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15214

Details: Did you know that trees can communicate with one another? Did you know some insects only eat one type of plant? Did you know some plants can't reproduce without help from other living creatures? What happens if there aren't enough predators in an ecosystem? On this guided hike, Pittsburgh Park Rangers will be guiding you along the muddy spring trails of Riverview Park at a leisurely pace as we stop periodically to discuss how the different parts in an ecosystem are connected to one another. This hike will add up to be about half hiking, and half stopping and talking.

5/18: Guided Nature Hike in Schenley Park

Location: Westinghouse Memorial & Pond
Time: 10AM to 11:30PM
Details: Join Ranger George on a 2-mile hike in Schenley Park. We will hike the Lower Panther Hollow Trail and Steve Faloon Memorial Trail to make a loop beginning and ending at the Westinghouse Memorial & Pond. Feel free to bring binoculars, field guides and any questions about the nature or history of Schenley Park! The hike will be moderate difficulty with a steep downhill walk then long, gradual uphill with a steep hill halfway through the hike. We will make a few stops at points of interest. Bathrooms and water will be available near the start and end of the hike when we stop at the Visitor's Center. Please wear weather appropriate clothing. The hike will happen unless there are unsafe weather conditions. Hike may also be shortened based on weather conditions. Ages 5 and up are welcome.

Location: Monongehela Incline Upper Station (outside) 8 Grandview Ave, Pittsburgh PA 15211

Details: Join Ranger Marya on a 2-mile out and back hike along the Grand View Scenic Byway in Emerald View Park. We will stroll along Grandview Ave. from the Mon Incline to the Point of View statue and back again. You are encouraged to bring your camera as we will be stopping to take in the World Class views from several overlooks! The hike does cross a busy street and has some elevation change. Please wear weather appropriate clothing and consider sunblock as there is limited shade. All ages are welcome as are well behaved dogs on leashes.

Location: Allegheny Observatory. 159 Riverview Ave.

Details: See the park from a whole different perspective on this hike through the forests of Riverview Park under the moonlight, with Park Rangers guiding the way. Flashlights will be on hand if needed, with the goal is to use nothing but the moonlight.The hike will last about an hour. After the hike, the group will loop back to the Allegheny Observatory where participants will have the opportunity to look through the telescopes and view the moon. This is a weather dependent event! Details: Come join Rangers and help lend a hand to clean up Schenley Park! Parking is available adjacent to the shelter. Volunteers are required to review and sign a “hold harmless liability release form” prior to the activity. We provide bags, buckets, pickers & gloves. Wear sturdy closed toe shoes or boots, clothing & protection from ticks, and bring your water bottle. This activity will involve walking about a mile, carrying equipment & garbage, stepping off the trail and onto hillsides & graded areas. Everyone will return to the Oval shelter by 111:30 am.

Mission

Pittsburgh Park Rangers work year-round as liaisons between the public and the City of Pittsburgh to advocate and promote City Parks. Park Rangers are responsible for park related ordinance enforcement, educational programming and oversight of all Pittsburgh City Parks. Through daily patrols, continual safety education, and emergency response assistance they ensure safety for all park patrons.

Park Presence

Pittsburgh Park Rangers have jurisdiction over all Pittsburgh Parks and are actively present in all five regional parks including Emerald View, Frick, Highland, Riverview, and Schenley Parks. Rangers are also present in smaller parks including Allegheny Commons, Market Square, Mellon Park, and Westinghouse Park amongst others.

Rules and Regulations

Park Rangers are authorized to enforce and issue citations for any violation to park ordinances which can be found under the municipal code section 473 and 633. These rules include but are not limited to:

Park hours are 6AM-11PM unless otherwise noted.
All pets must remain on a leash throughout the park unless in an approved off-leash exercise area (OLEA) site.
Any disfigurement or removal of park amenities is prohibited. This includes natural resources such as lumber, plants, and/or seeds.
All forms of tobacco are prohibited within City Parks. This includes but is not limited to cigarettes, cigars, vapes, e-cigarettes, and chewing tobacco.
Interfering with any wildlife is prohibited, this includes hunting, trapping, feeding, and/or harvesting.
Proper permits are required for any pavilion rental or special event happening within parks.
Drones and Model Airplanes are prohibited in City Parks
Grilling is only permitted in designated grilling areas. Campfires are prohibited without a permit.

Take the first step in your journey towards becoming an official Junior Park Ranger! Complete the Junior Park Ranger Adventure Guide(PDF, 15MB) and exchange it for a badge at any Park Ranger event throughout the year.
